CKLN Radio is hiring a full-time Station Manager. The position will begin March 1, 2011. This is a unique interim contract position for the term of one year, with the possibility of an extension at the end of a successful term. This candidate will not only be the Station Manager but will be helping CKLN to develop and implement a new office infrastructure for the management of the station in future years in accordance with its new by-laws. The Station Manager is a non-Union position.

Job Details: The Station Manager is responsible for the daily operations of CKLN Radio as a non-profit corporation with regular office hours. This is a management position, not an on-air position.

This includes the administration of the station's paid and volunteer staff and also involvement with or supervision of various committees struck from the membership for programming, hiring, and other aspects of CKLN’s internal operations. He or she is also responsible for regular communication between CKLN and its constituents, its creditors, the CRTC, SOCAN, the Canada Revenue Agency, the NCRA, other regulatory agencies, granting bodies, as well as other media outlets.

He or she will maintain and develop contact with Ryerson staff, students and organizations. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to helping to ensure that CKLN is consistent in its broadcasting, and that the broadcast is consistent with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, as well as interacting with staff.

The Station Manager will report to the CKLN Board of Directors. It is expected that he or she will attend all Board meetings to provide a report on the station's operations if asked, and to deliver any staff or committee reports when requested. The Station Manager must be familiar with and work in accordance with CKLN by-laws, CKLN’s mandate, the CRTC Radio Regulations, and must keep current with applicable government regulations and policies (e.g. CRTC) that affect CKLN.

Until the hiring of a Programming Director, the Manager will be handling some programming issues, such as listener complaints, disciplinary measures, overseeing and filing new show proposals as they come in. Some instruction for volunteers will also be required. They will also be responsible on a temporary basis for the organization and filing of the daily program logs and the scheduling and programming of on-air traffic.

They will also assist in the hiring of new staff, as well as assisting in the coordination and execution of special programming periods (such as International Women's Week, African Liberation Month, Gay Pride Week, FundFEST, etc. where supplementary contract staff are hired by CKLN to administrate programming content and its execution during the terms of their employment) as well as other operational managerial duties that arise on a daily basis and will be more fully outlined to interview candidates.


The ideal candidate will have prior managerial and/or administrative experience, with either a non-profit or community organization.

Candidates should have experience in volunteer management, budget management and fundraising. Experience with campus or community radio will be strongly considered.

He or she should also have relevant or equivalent experience working with non-profit organizations, including experience with committees and boards of directors. He or she must be computer-literate, attentive to detail and must understand how to use some of CKLN’s technology.

He or she must possess excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills and be willing to learn new skills. He or she must be able to work effectively in diverse, fast-paced and multi-cultural environments.

Post secondary education is an asset but not required if the candidate’s work experience is relevant and extensive.
